Stained glass mosaic panels for the airport

According to the terms of reference, it was necessary to produce 5 oval mosaic panels of stained glass with installation in the city of Novosibirsk. The deadline for completing the work was very short (1 month, including installation), due to the opening of a new terminal and airport business lounge.

Where did such a period come from? Another workshop performed this order before us, but they delayed the deadlines and the customer decided to change the performers and turned to us. We started making the whole mosaic from scratch, without using samples already made by other craftsmen to work.

How did the assembly process go?

Since we had the shortest deadlines for the execution of the project, we acted quickly and decisively.

In a couple of days, the material necessary for the work was purchased (stained glass in the right colors), samples were agreed upon, and printouts of sketches were made.

The team started working as soon as we received feedback from the customer.

There were no special problems with the purchase of stained glass, at first we took all the appropriate colors from our artworker.shop store, and what was missing was bought in various specialized stores in Moscow.

Since we also needed to deliver a stock of material to the city of Novosibirsk for the final installation of the panels, to save time, glass and tools were distributed among the luggage of the team and thus airlifted to the desired point.

How were the preparatory work carried out?

Before going to Novosibirsk to install a mosaic panel, our team conducted a number of experiments with adhesive compositions.

The task was responsible, because it was necessary to mount more than 40 m2 of stained glass mosaic panels on the ceiling in 3 days, plus to perform grouting with epoxy grout.

To implement the idea, several different types of adhesives based on cement, polyurethane, silicone and epoxy were tested.

After a series of experiments in the workshop, we chose the glue most suitable for the implementation of the idea, found such an adhesive that allowed us to easily mount the panel on the ceiling and start grout a day after the installation of the mosaic panel.

Since the mosaic is made of stained glass, which has transparency in some places, the glue must also have properties that do not worsen the appearance of the mosaic after installation.

Installing mosaics on the ceiling is always a difficult event that requires knowledge and experience. In our case, the installation process was complicated by the oval shape of the mosaic panel, which is difficult to center on the ceiling and accurately get into the ceiling niche. In some places, it was necessary to refine the mosaic panel in place and saw off or report fragments directly on the ceiling.

The photos were provided to us by the customer. Now the airport is fully operational and pleases its visitors with bright and colorful stained glass panels.
